H100 PCIe and H100 SXM belong to different server designs. Confirm the exact GPU variant and OEM chassis before comparing prices or trying to expand an existing system.
The hardware distinction
H100 SXM is used on an HGX baseboard and provides high-bandwidth GPU-to-GPU NVLink within supported multi-GPU systems. NVIDIA lists 80 GB HBM3, 3.35 TB/s memory bandwidth, and up to 700 W configurable power for the SXM variant.
H100 PCIe is a card installed in an OEM-supported PCIe server. Its memory, power setting, and interconnect depend on the exact SKU. H100 NVL is another PCIe form factor with its own specifications. A PCIe card does not fit an HGX SXM socket.
Check the NVIDIA H100 product specifications and the server maker's supported configuration.
Which should you quote?
For multi-GPU training, ask about the number of GPUs, intra-node interconnect, and network across nodes. An HGX SXM system may suit workloads that exchange large amounts of data between GPUs. For a PCIe system, check its actual GPU interconnect and physical slot, power, and cooling support.
For single-GPU work, the complete server build, availability, and warranty may matter more than an interconnect specification. Benchmark the same model before paying for a higher-end configuration.
