The purchase price is only one part of owning a GPU server. The useful comparison is the cost of a complete system over the period you expect to use it, divided by the work it actually completes.
Build a purchase case
| Cost | What to include |
|---|---|
| Hardware | OEM server, GPUs, CPUs, RAM, storage, NICs, optics, and spares |
| Delivery | Freight, insurance, taxes, duties, and installation |
| Facility | Rack space, power, cooling, and network |
| Operations | Monitoring, support, repairs, and staff time |
| Financing | Interest or cost of capital, if applicable |
| Exit | Residual value or disposal, using a conservative estimate |
For B200, an HGX server, a DGX system, and a GB200 rack are different purchases. Ask for a current written quote for the specific build.
Build a rental case
Add the hourly GPU rate, storage, data transfer, support, idle time, and any reservation commitments. Match the rented GPU count, memory, interconnect, and software environment to the proposed purchased system.
Cloud rates change by provider, region, commitment, and availability. Check the provider's current terms on the day you calculate. A stale rate can flip the conclusion.
Compare the same work
- Run or obtain a benchmark for your model, precision, batch size, and framework.
- Estimate billable GPU-hours and expected utilization for the next 12 to 36 months.
- Calculate the full cost of ownership and the full rental cost for that use.
- Vary utilization, electricity price, cloud rate, and residual value.
- Check how a hardware delay would affect the plan.
A simple break-even formula is:
Owned fixed cost / (monthly rental cost - monthly owned operating cost)
Use it only when the denominator is positive, and include financing and resale assumptions separately. It is a scenario, not a universal break-even month.
When each route can fit
Rental is useful for experiments, variable demand, or a short project. Ownership can fit predictable, high utilization when the facility and operations are ready. Hybrid use can cover peaks while owned systems handle a base load.
Use a current written quote for the hardware price and delivery date. Send the system you need and your workload if you want numbers for a real comparison.
